Yaa Gyasi was born in Ghana and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. This spring, as part of the University of Iowa's 175th anniversary celebrations, the Stanley Reads book club will be reading A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley. A Thousand Acres won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction in 1991 and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1992.
