For Admitted Students
Once you are admitted to the summer workshop, you will need to apply for admission to the University of Iowa as a Nondegree student. This application does not require a writing sample, but does require an official transcript. We will send an email with instructions to every admitted student.
Please be aware that acceptance to the summer program does not alter your chances of being admitted to the Writers' Workshop full-time graduate program.
Questions can be directed to: deb-west@uiowa.edu.
Housing
The University has some level of available housing for undergraduate students. Most summer workshop students live in sublets and temporary housing (hotels, bed and breakfasts, Airbnbs). We will do our best to help.
Registration and Credit
The Writers’ Workshop is a graduate program, so our classes are generally not open to undergraduates. We are, however, able to make exceptions for the summer session. If you are admitted to a summer workshop and you are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree or never received an undergraduate degree, please respond to your admissions email and tell us. We will let you know what steps to take.
Class Schedules
Typically, the 3-week poetry workshop meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Typically, the 3-week fiction workshops meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In addition to classes, the summer program hosts readings and events during the week and occasionally over the weekend. Attendance at the events is not required, but they are a nice benefit of being in Iowa City.
International Students
International students should contact Andrew Wade in International Admissions for the complete requirements, by phone, at (319) 335-1534, or by email, at andrew-wade@uiowa.edu.
