College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
For International Students
The Iowa Writers' Workshop accepts applications to the funded two-year MFA in Creative Writing program in poetry and fiction from all writers working in English. Check the How to Apply page for more information.
Reasons to apply to the Writers' Workshop as an international student:
- Time to write: prioritize your creative work for the time you are in the program
- Exposure to the literary world: the program brings a wide ranger of authors to teach, give talks, read from their work
- Community of writers: develop relationships with a large cohort of working writers
- Other opportunities: take advantage of cross-listed classes with the screenwriting program, the MFA in Translation, and the Spanish MFA, to expand your writing skillset
“I found, at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, the core things that a writer needs: an intelligent and passionate community of fellow writers, insightful mentors who delight in the young writer’s ambition, boundless support, and an innate understanding of the quirks, frustrations and desires that are particular to creatives. Iowa is a particular experience, well-suited to the ambitious writer with an independent spirit and a desire to write great fiction.”
--Novuyo Tshuma, MFA 2015, author of House of Stone
