Four Workshop Grads Longlisted for 2017 National Book Awards

Four graduates of the Iowa Writers' Workshop were among those longlisted for the 2017 National Book Awards: Laurel Snyder, Shane McCrae, Daniel Alarcón, and Carmen Maria Machado.

Laurel Snyder was longlisted for the 2017 Award for Young People's Literature for her novel, Orphan Island, her sixth novel for children. 

Shane McCrae was longlisted for the 2017 Award for Poetry, for his poetry collection, In the Language of My Captor, his fifth poetry collection, published by Wesleyan University Press.

Daniel Alarcón and Carmen Maria Machado were longlisted for the 2017 Award for Fiction. Daniel Alarcón was nominated for his story collection, The King Is Always Above the People: Stories, published by Penguin Random House. Carmen Machado was nominated for her debut, Her Body and Other Parties: Stories, published by Graywolf Press.
